Thursday November 10th I traveled on the back of a motorcycle to a little village called Taito. It was nice when we left Kitale but the rains came early today. Part way into our trip we pulled over so that I could put on my raincoat. My driver was very concerned about me getting wet and kept asking if we should stop. We both knew it would get worse before the sun would shine again so we continued as we were not that far away. It was a good decision as we soon rode out of the storm.
Once off the main road we started to follow smaller and smaller roads. Then we came to what I thought was our destination but it was not. It was the point where we started to walk because the roads were just too bad to travel on. There were deep pot holes full of water. It was a peaceful area and the air was cool now. We could see the rain clouds moving in over us and notice that it was raining in an area ahead of us.
The rain season continues here and should soon be over but in February the heavy rains or long rains begin. As we are trying our best to make our way through the mud and the puddles Evans says “If you come here in February you want to pray that you are a big trout.” He was trying to tell me that the heavy rains would completely cover the road.
We were welcomed into this small home sitting in a cleared area. Today the widows from the area would come together for a meeting. Just as we entered the doorway the clouds opened up and the rains came down. The heavy rain on the roof was so loud that we could not hear each other speak. We all sat quietly until it stopped.
About 15 widows came today. Most of them are widows because of AIDS. They cannot afford the fare to come into town for church so we are bringing church to them.
We had an awesome time together. There were serious times, then laughter. Before we left we shared some bread and a cup a tea. It was a time of getting to know each other a little better. It was a time of asking questions as well. Just what does an American woman do?
James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
